Posted by planetweckesser on 5/20/2009 9:09:22 AM I am sure this is the same unit that Sony uses - HVL-LBP - according to the product brochure there is a 1200 series and 1800 series both with 10 lamps - the light output for the 1200 series seems to be the same as the Sony (1100 lux at 3 meteres) but the Comer 1800 seems to put out 1800 lux at 3 meteres - is this the case - that is, is it stronger than the Sony HVL-LBP - if that is the case I am interested in buying it from you

Replied by LA Color Pros Thank you for your interest in the LED lights. I have talked to Comer about the specifications. They do manufacture 1200 and 1800 series. The 1200 series is equivalent to the light output from the Sony model.
 
According to the spec, CM1800 produces 1800 lux at 1 meter distance (not 3 meters).

"Michael - I just got my Comer 1800 from Taky today and it is certainly more than a "slight improvement" - the light output compared with the Sony is incredible. I just got through with my own test of the Sony HVL-LBP against the Comer LBPS 1800 and there is no contest. I used the Sony PMW-EX1 with settings of 4200 for white balance, F 1.9 and -3db Gain, 1/60 shutter in a small room with a bookcase in the corner and white shutters on a window to the side of that and tested the lights 6' and 9' from the corner (no other lights in room and window was shuttered - i.e. total darkness) - the difference between the two lights is literally night and day (pun intended). In addition to light output (I really didn't totally believe Comer's photometric charts before - that has changed), there is a large difference with the "spot" lens - i.e. much larger spot than the Sony and of course a lot brighter (I was getting a lot of zebras off the white shutters - my zebra is set at 90). When using the 3200 gel diffuser the light output goes down but is still excellent and if one uses the diffuser and the spot lens at the same time the "spot" becomes more of a flood and the light output is almost up there with the output from the non-diffused, non-"spotted" light. I also like the 4500K color of the Comer compared with the Sony 5500K. With mixed indoor lighting with Tungsten as well as light from windows - this should fill the bill quite nicely. I have done similar tests with the Litepanels Mini and the new Litepanels MicroPro and the Comer totally blows them out of the water.
 
By the way - I don't think this is a copy of the Sony - every little detail down to the smallest screw is the same as the Sony except for the on/off switch and LED readout of the battery charge level. I can only assume that Comer is the original manufacturer of the Sony light and have finally decided to "build a better mousetrap" on their own.
 
IMHO, even if this were the same price or even a bit more expensive than the Sony, I still think it would be a better deal."

Let me just say, that everything that was posted above to me is true.
As an owner and long time user of the Sony HVL-LBP lights, let me just say that the light output form the Comer 1800 puts the Sony HVL light to shame.
 
It's no contest.
 
With no filters applied to both lights, the Comer 1800 is much much more intense in it's output and spread. Also, the 4500k colored LEDs (Sony HVL is 550K) are much more pleasing indoors as well.
 
When you flip down the 3200k diffuser, which the Sony HVL does not have, the light output is still more powerful than the output form the Sony HVL light with no filters applied.
 
Apply both of the filters on the Comer1800 (diffuser & spot focus) and you get nice strong 3200k floor light, with fairly decent spread. And with the spot focus and diffuser applied the light output is identical to the light with no filter applied. Very nice.
 
Overall , the build quality is identical to the Sony light except for a few things such as power switch and such. But it's very solid and I can't wait to give it a whirl at next weekends wedding shoot.
 
It seems like I will be selling off my Sony HVL lights for some more Comers.

So it is very likely the included power cord can be used with your battery. But in the mean time, we cannot guarantee. I'm a long time user of the PagLight in conjuction with the Powerarc lampholder. For you that don't know, Powerarc consumes 32w but the light output is equivalent to 100w.
 
My only consern was if the lght ouptput would be the same because at the specs, Pag states 1850lux and the CM-LED 1800lux. So i tested both lights side by side at 1m distance on a gray card at complete darkness. I used my JVC GY-HD201 at 30mm zoom and the iris was self adjusted on both ligths at F2.8 at 4300K.
As far as light quality, Pag is superior. This is because it has a nice smooth reflector and the light is distributed evenly throughout the light circle. In contrary CM-LBPS1800 has a grid of horizontal and verical lines to soften the light. It's not that soft as Pag but it does the job.
 
I'm really happy i bought the CM-LBPS1800 because i can power it from the D-tap connector without draining all my power. And I'm free of the battery belts that Pag needed. Another thing is that leds will never go off. Powerarc lamp has 300hrs life and if costs $200!!!.

WOW! Output is incredible, the spread and fall off is way better. There is no contest. I was going to buy the new pro version of the litepanels, Im glad I found this light. The battery lasted me all night. I had some questions for seller and he responded promptly each time. Great light.

I am a new inductee to the digital video world and am looking to purchase an on-camera light to go with my DVX100B. Judging by the footage and reviews, the LBPS1800 is probably for me. I do need to know, however, if the battery comes with the light of if I need to purchase one separately (and is there an available discount on it if so). Also, would the battery need a separate charger or would it be able to charge internally through the light itself? This looks like a really great product and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I too, am in the UK, where this light does not seem to be locally available (heck, seems like virtually no-one, anywhere, does). Although I could not and would not hold you to it, do you have any idea of what it ends up costing after taxes and import duty? Have you had feedback from UK buyers on this?
 
Also, as someone who does not own fancy A-B batteries, the power cables are no use. I'd love to see this come with a 4-pin XLR instead. I'll make one myself (with an in-line switch so I can leave the brightness pot in the same place between takes), but would be great to have an option.
 
Finally, when are you expecting to get this back in stock?

The light is superb! The most powerful On-board video light i've used based on its weight and size. The light has a soft output when the 3200K filter is popped on, on par with litepanels MicroPro for softness but way brighter. It covers a very wide angle unlike other halogen video lights that shoots an unflattering spotlight at your subject with very harsh shadows.
 
Take Note: As stated in the picture above, the light accepts a reverse polarity input. All my other equipment (smallHD Monitor, iKan monitor) that accepts a 12V input is DIFFERENT from this light. do make sure you check before plugging in an external source.

If youre a wedding/event videographer, get this light. You wont regret it. It helped me get out of many 'sticky' lighting situations last weekend.
If youre a DOP doing Narrative or info-eds, it comes in handy as a quick set-up fill light and location light.

I researched all of the other lights available because LED is clearly the way to go IMO. I was a little suspect of the 3200 filter when viewed to the naked eye, but after seeing my D300 adjust the white balance automatically the results were rather impressive. I've downgraded my main flash SB800 in favor of adding smaller wireless flash units for fill and back lighting.
 
It is very bright, but a person can keep their eyes open without a noticeable squint when the flash is on full power. This is a much better result than the typical flash cringe for sure. I'd like to see more professional headshots on the website, but I'm sure users will be posting them soon
 
When shooting my 3 month old baby I leave all but one of the "barn doors" closed, perfect! The car charger and ball unit I have no real use for. It seems a little heavier than my SB800, but with well over 100 minutes of constant light with no battery pack it is a no brainer. I'll try and post some samples after I adjust to direct lighting again.
 
Improvements:
   I'd like a separate on off switch to use my prior brightness, and maybe in a better location so I can access it from the left or right. Granted with the battery life I can just leave it on.
   It is a little bulky. Just remember to take the battery off before storing it in a bag.
   The corner tabs to open or close the diffuser and spot focus covers should be a little larger.
   I'd like a clip or switch to hold out the focusing filter for the "spot trick."
   A custom gel holder "door" would be fantastic as well (I can DIY but it wouldn't be as slick)

I usually standing 5 to 10 feet from the camcorder when shooting. I have been using 3 light stands for my shoots. Which product do you recommend I order to replace or enhance my current setup. I also have a K20D digital camera. Does your product mount onto the K20D?

Replied by LA Color Pros Comer lights are flexible to be setup as flood or spot mode. You can use them to replace your current lighting setup easily. I am not familiar with the K20D digital camera. If it has a standard accessory shoe, it can host the Comer light.

It gave me enough punch but still looked natural to do an outdoor night scene on a rooftop deck in San Francisco. The lighting looked pretty natural for only having one light. It was really windy and really cold up there so we didn't want to pull power and set up a bunch of HMI's.
 
We also did a scene where the talent was walking down a dark street and had a PA hand holding the light up high walking backwards with them. I was able to dim it enough to get the scene to look believable.
 
The light worked out great.

I broke the plastic shoe fitting very quickly though and Sony replaced it with an improved strengthened version. This one has lasted and seems up to the task. I am keen to buy the CM1800 for both its extra power as well as the focussed spot ability, but need to know that spares for this shoe attachment are available in the unlikely event of any damage to the shoe occurring.
I am based in Australia and thus the spares issue is important to me.
Do you have the unit now in stock?

I do have one question, however. The pamphlet that came with the light says not to use the light with an intelligent accessory shoe. My other camera is an XL2 which has an intelligent acc. shoe. Has anyone used this light on the XL2? Will mounting this light on the XL2 do any damage?

Last summer, I purchased the Comer 1800 to use with my Sony HVR-270. I found it to be an improvement over my Anton Bauer UL-2.
 
While I didn't find battery life to be what others claimed, there were other features I liked. The spread was smoother, not as spotty, while the 3200k and 4500K filters allowed me to get pleasing colors at different temperatures.
 
When the light malfunctioned in December, Taky replaced my light at no charge for the new Comer. I discovered that the new light met or exceeded the battery life others claimed. Taky was very accessible by phone, text, and Email.
 
I recommend checking out the Comer 1800 and LA Color Pros.

It ended up, most of the time guests did not know where the event take place as they heard only the announcement from the MC. Comer spot light feature gives a focal point in the ballroom and making it a stage-like.

It will increase your rig stability too. Now you can mount the Comer 1800 light to the bracket without feeling too big. Otherwise, the Comer 900 light will fit what you need to do.

Comer lights come with D-tap cable that you can connect it to your existing battery without using the NP-Lxxx batteries. One customer has a light malfunction because he powered the light with both D-tap and the battery at the same time. Thus, it's best to avoid that.
 
The D-tap cable is not permanently attached to the light. You connect the one end of the included cable to the light through the DC-in. The other end is connected to the D connector on the battery.

first off, i am not a professional, in fact i am comfortable taking shots with a cybershot camera equipped with exmor r and sweep. lol. but in saying that, i wanted a decent all in one still and motion camera. i have tried to shoot video at night inside or out with no lighting and its useless (as im sure you'd know). so, to feel happy with my purchase; i need a light.
 
After all the forums, reviews, video's and numerous emails, the Comer models are just far beyond everything else sub $800USD retail. so now i need to ask a question; most of my night footage would be outdoors with minimal to no light assistance at all. the environment would be often a backyard barbeque with several ppl to fit in view. Is the 900 model capable enough or must i go to the top to the 1800 model? if i need something stronger than the 1800, what would you recommend that would make sense for the environment mentioned above?
 
Again, i wouldn't call myself even a regular camera user, and you can assume i know nothing but the basics (probably not even that, as i still don't understand all the features on my fz100), but your lighting knowledge and experience would be incredibly helpful for me to get the best use out of my new toy.

The younger sibling Comer 900 is also a great choice. However, it delivers only half the brightness with 2 levels of brightness control instead of a full dimmer. Thus, if you can afford and you don't mind a bigger light, go with Comer 1800 by all means. You never complain there are too much light because you can always dim the brightness down to the exact amount you like with the dimmer. However, in situation that you want more light coverage, 1800 can deliver.
 
In your situation when you shoot complete dark outdoor, you will find the 1800 gives you the best lighting result as well as the wide coverage.

The condenser lens trick is while closing the condenser lens, leave it open about half an inch. In that case, the light will be condensed into a very narrow but strong beam. It's good when you need to zoom in in a dark place.

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Carl, as everybody recommend, the best lighting setup is the 3-point lighting. It can be achieved by 3 light sources, or 2 light sources + 1 reflector. Other than that, you can also achieve decent interview lighting using just 1 light setup on the right as key light, and 1 reflector on the left as fill light. For such setup, you will need a powerful light for that purpose. Comer 1800 will be strong enough to do this job.
 
The light is already diffused. You can also use the top orange diffuser to further diffuse the light source. Or a lot of photographers replaced the top orange diffuser with the white diffuser to create a soft box effect.

To create depth to the video, you can use another Comer 1800 light shines from the back of the object. That will creates a glow of the person to separate from the background.

I bought the Radio Shack power brick but the 1800 only attains about 25% brightness.

The Comer 900 has a very convenient plastic shoe that allows you to mount a small wireless mic receiver. I've used this combo several times and it works great.
 
With the 1800, once you mount the light, where do you mount the wireless receiver? You'd have to purchase a dual shoe wye and have yet another contraption on top.

Replied by LA Color Pros The reason not to have another shoe on top is the total weight. That will also make the rig higher. It will put a lot of pressure to the camera shoe itself.
 
We have several brackets you can consider when using the light with another accessory such as a shotgun mic.

Replied by LA Color Pros I checked the spec of Ledzilla. They don't mention any lux spec except the one that is 3000 lux spot. Comer 1800 has 10 high power high output LED bulbs. The included condenser lens also allow the light to focus in spot light. Comer is also unique at 4500K color temperature so you can use it indoor or outdoor without any filter. Most of the time we need a diffused light source rather than just a small focus spot.
 
There is also a condenser lens trick for the Comer light that create a narrow pin spot that projects far away. Here's you can take a look at some sample videos.

The battery will be hung at the bottom of the light stand and function a little bit like sand bag. Then I can connect and discount the power from the battery below. No need to lower and raise the light stand to turn on and off the light.

Posted by cgbier on 6/3/2013 12:13:00 AM Holy Maccaroni, that is a piece of light! Loads of power, the dimmer adjust finely. It is compacter than I thought, and even goes well with my Canon HV30. When using at 4600k on an XF series cam, you have to do a custom white balance. Auto W/B on the HV works fine.
 
Great light. I can only recommend it. Throws out more than the Light Panel for three times the $$$ I have.

I still use my Comer all the time , but not as a cameralight anymore, now I tend to use it with the lens as a spotty little accent light when I don't have time to screw around with AC or I need daylight.
Only problem is that one of the barn doors flops around pretty loose these days. I can't figure out how to tighten it up. The screws don't seem to help.

It says it's a model LED-1800, 1200lm, came in some weird "spash" box with an OEM NP-F970 and powertap adaptor. It was only $70 so I figured I would see how it performs prior to plunking down several hundred for one from lacolorpros. It arrived and I was immediately disappointed. LED's put out 4700k per my Sony, but with the condenser, you get 6300k blue center with a severe green ring. It's like a weird circular blue/green rainbow, very unusable. Tested it against my 900 lumen (1m) Neewer CN160. The CN160 is about 3-4x brighter. Also tested it against my CN304, which is 1800 lumens. Obviously, it is 6-8x brighter!
 
So my questions would be as follows. If my CN304 LED is listed as 1800 lumens (1m) at 5800k, would your Comer 1800 be AS BRIGHT at 4500k? When the Comer condenser is applied, does the color temperature change, and is there any off color rings involved like my "splash"? I can handle bluish and even greenish CT's, I gel everything I own to 3200k, but weird multicolor light is unusable.
 
Last question would be, with the CTO applied, what is the resulting color temperature? If your Comer is actually 1800 lumens at 4500k, then after applying a 3200k CTO, it should be BRIGHTER than my 18 watt CN304 with 3200k CTO right? If you can stand behind the claims, I can place an order right away. :)
 

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Paul, we don't have your CN304 light so we cannot comment on it. Our Comer 1800 light output at 1800lux at 4500K color temperature. When using the condenser lens, the output is even brighter. The color temperature is constant at 4500K. The top filter is the CTO filter that change the color temperature to 3200K.
