Color Temperature

Problem with shooting 5600K day light indoor.

Color temperature is measured at Kelvin. You can learn more about it at Wikipedia.

Typical outdoor day light (cool light) is 5600K. Indoor tungsten has a lower color temperature of 3200K (warm light). Currently in the market, many inexpensive LED lights (including flash light as well) only available in 5600K. To use such color temperature indoor, video will become too blue and very cool (not in a good way). Especially when the object is human being, people will look like corpse. When filming wedding, video footage should be warm and happy.

Therefore, some camera LED lights will provide an orange gel (or CTO) to lower the color temperature closer to 3200K. You can see the difference here.

It shall fix the problem. However, applying CTO or gel will lower the overall brightness output from the camera light making the light less useful.

You can also still shoot in 5600K indoor then color correct it in post production. However, the end result is always not satisfactory. Objects nearby will look right but everywhere else far behind and the scene will be too orange-y.
