Posted by planetweckesser on 5/20/2009 9:09:22 AM I am sure this is the same unit that Sony uses - HVL-LBP - according to the product brochure there is a 1200 series and 1800 series both with 10 lamps - the light output for the 1200 series seems to be the same as the Sony (1100 lux at 3 meteres) but the Comer 1800 seems to put out 1800 lux at 3 meteres - is this the case - that is, is it stronger than the Sony HVL-LBP - if that is the case I am interested in buying it from you

Replied by LA Color Pros Thank you for your interest in the LED lights. I have talked to Comer about the specifications. They do manufacture 1200 and 1800 series. The 1200 series is equivalent to the light output from the Sony model.

According to the spec, CM1800 produces 1800 lux at 1 meter distance (not 3 meters).
Posted by Kevin on 5/30/2009 4:03:00 PM Thanks for the YouTube demo - I'm sure it will pay off for you. Would you please send me your quotation for:

2 NP-F970 Sony Compatible Rechargeable Battery.
1 Dual-charger

Once I have your invoice, a $USD check will arrive in about a week. Once it clears, please ship to Vancouver, BC.

Can you send me your quotation for the above on Monday morning? (I'm also in Pacific time zone). Thanks, Kevin

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Kevin, thank you for your interest of our products. An separate email has been sent to you.
Posted by planetweckesser on 6/4/2009 10:16:00 PM Taky - I just posted this on the http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/photon-management/236502-my-view-led-lights-2.html#post1154226 dvinfo.net forum comparing the Comer1800 and the Sony HVL-LBP:

"Michael - I just got my Comer 1800 from Taky today and it is certainly more than a "slight improvement" - the light output compared with the Sony is incredible. I just got through with my own test of the Sony HVL-LBP against the Comer LBPS 1800 and there is no contest. I used the Sony PMW-EX1 with settings of 4200 for white balance, F 1.9 and -3db Gain, 1/60 shutter in a small room with a bookcase in the corner and white shutters on a window to the side of that and tested the lights 6' and 9' from the corner (no other lights in room and window was shuttered - i.e. total darkness) - the difference between the two lights is literally night and day (pun intended). In addition to light output (I really didn't totally believe Comer's photometric charts before - that has changed), there is a large difference with the "spot" lens - i.e. much larger spot than the Sony and of course a lot brighter (I was getting a lot of zebras off the white shutters - my zebra is set at 90). When using the 3200 gel diffuser the light output goes down but is still excellent and if one uses the diffuser and the spot lens at the same time the "spot" becomes more of a flood and the light output is almost up there with the output from the non-diffused, non-"spotted" light. I also like the 4500K color of the Comer compared with the Sony 5500K. With mixed indoor lighting with Tungsten as well as light from windows - this should fill the bill quite nicely. I have done similar tests with the Litepanels Mini and the new Litepanels MicroPro and the Comer totally blows them out of the water.

By the way - I don't think this is a copy of the Sony - every little detail down to the smallest screw is the same as the Sony except for the on/off switch and LED readout of the battery charge level. I can only assume that Comer is the original manufacturer of the Sony light and have finally decided to "build a better mousetrap" on their own.

IMHO, even if this were the same price or even a bit more expensive than the Sony, I still think it would be a better deal."

Replied by LA Color Pros Thank you for writing a review of this light and the comparison.
Posted by Michael on 6/16/2009 12:18:00 PM I am the person that the post above was written to, and I just received the Comer 1800 the other day.

Let me just say, that everything that was posted above to me is true.
As an owner and long time user of the Sony HVL-LBP lights, let me just say that the light output form the Comer 1800 puts the Sony HVL light to shame.

It's no contest.

With no filters applied to both lights, the Comer 1800 is much much more intense in it's output and spread. Also, the 4500k colored LEDs (Sony HVL is 550K) are much more pleasing indoors as well.

When you flip down the 3200k diffuser, which the Sony HVL does not have, the light output is still more powerful than the output form the Sony HVL light with no filters applied.

Apply both of the filters on the Comer1800 (diffuser & spot focus) and you get nice strong 3200k floor light, with fairly decent spread. And with the spot focus and diffuser applied the light output is identical to the light with no filter applied. Very nice.

Overall , the build quality is identical to the Sony light except for a few things such as power switch and such. But it's very solid and I can't wait to give it a whirl at next weekends wedding shoot.

It seems like I will be selling off my Sony HVL lights for some more Comers.

Replied by LA Color Pros Michael, thank you for leaving us your feedback and we're glad the light works great for you. I myself use the light too at weddings. It's the best light I ever have. No more grainy reception video :)

Posted by chris on 6/23/2009 12:43:00 PM Can I run this off my Anton Bauer Batteries utilizing their standard Power Tap cable on my ENG cameras?

thx

Replied by LA Color Pros We don't have the Anton Bauer batteries here. Comer also manufactures batteries that uses the D-Tap cord. So it is very likely the included power cord can be used with your battery. But in the mean time, we cannot guarantee. To help a little, we updated this page with 2 more photos showing the B-Type connector. Take a look.
Posted by Bill on 7/5/2009 9:55:00 PM Do you sell the CM-LED1800, the one without battery? If yes, is it on the same price as the CM-LBPS1800? Could you tell me the shipping cost for Greece-Europe? Thanks.

Replied by LA Color Pros We do not carry that in stock but we can special order one for you. There will be an additional $20 shipping cost added on top of it. Email us at info@lacolorPros.com if you want to proceed. It will take about 2 weeks+ for the item to be delivered.

You can also try using the NP-F770 battery which is smaller and lighter in weight.
Posted by Bill on 8/3/2009 7:27:00 AM Today i received my CM-LED 1800.

I'm a long time user of the PagLight in conjuction with the Powerarc lampholder. For you that don't know, Powerarc consumes 32w but the light output is equivalent to 100w.

My only consern was if the lght ouptput would be the same because at the specs, Pag states 1850lux and the CM-LED 1800lux. So i tested both lights side by side at 1m distance on a gray card at complete darkness. I used my JVC GY-HD201 at 30mm zoom and the iris was self adjusted on both ligths at F2.8 at 4300K.
As far as light quality, Pag is superior. This is because it has a nice smooth reflector and the light is distributed evenly throughout the light circle. In contrary CM-LBPS1800 has a grid of horizontal and verical lines to soften the light. It's not that soft as Pag but it does the job.

I'm really happy i bought the CM-LBPS1800 because i can power it from the D-tap connector without draining all my power. And I'm free of the battery belts that Pag needed. Another thing is that leds will never go off. Powerarc lamp has 300hrs life and if costs $200!!!.

Taky thank you. I"ll probably buy another one for a friend. I"ll let you know by the end of the month.

Replied by LA Color Pros Bill, I'm glad you like the Comer 1800 light. Hope we can serve you again in the future.

Replied by LA Color Pros This light can be powered with any DC input between 6V-17V with the included D-Tab cable. Thanks.
Posted by Judd Rackham on 8/15/2009 1:43:00 AM I am an event/wedding videographer. I shoot with Canon XH A1 and 5D MK2. I have been using the litepanels micro. I recently bought the 1800 comer light. WOW! Output is incredible, the spread and fall off is way better. There is no contest. I was going to buy the new pro version of the litepanels, Im glad I found this light. The battery lasted me all night. I had some questions for seller and he responded promptly each time. Great light.

Replied by LA Color Pros Judd, glad you like the Comer light. We are here to serve.

Posted by Theodore O. Lawrence on 8/19/2009 7:54:00 PM Hi,

I am a new inductee to the digital video world and am looking to purchase an on-camera light to go with my DVX100B. Judging by the footage and reviews, the LBPS1800 is probably for me. I do need to know, however, if the battery comes with the light of if I need to purchase one separately (and is there an available discount on it if so). Also, would the battery need a separate charger or would it be able to charge internally through the light itself? This looks like a really great product and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

-T.O.

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Theodore, the light does not come with battery or charger. Scroll up to the top of the page and you see the link to the NP-F970 and NP-F750 battery and BC-V500 Charger. Thanks
Posted by Rick Nemcik Cruz on 9/5/2009 9:29:00 AM Please confirm that the Comer 1800-LBPS will operate from either a Sony battery or an external DC source. Also, I can't find the unit's weight listed anywhere, with or without the battery. How much does it weigh?

Replied by LA Color Pros Yes the light works with Sony L-series batteries, or 6-17V DC input using the included D-tap cable. Weight 420g which is about 1 pound.
Posted by Pete on 10/3/2009 10:01:00 AM Can you explain how the battery is attached to the the light?

Replied by LA Color Pros There is a battery compartment at the back of the light. The battery is simply slapped at the back.
Posted by polymerheart on 11/2/2009 11:50:00 AM Hi.

I too, am in the UK, where this light does not seem to be locally available (heck, seems like virtually no-one, anywhere, does). Although I could not and would not hold you to it, do you have any idea of what it ends up costing after taxes and import duty? Have you had feedback from UK buyers on this?

Also, as someone who does not own fancy A-B batteries, the power cables are no use. I'd love to see this come with a 4-pin XLR instead. I'll make one myself (with an in-line switch so I can leave the brightness pot in the same place between takes), but would be great to have an option.

Finally, when are you expecting to get this back in stock?

Many thanks!

Replied by LA Color Pros Thanks for your comment. The Comer 1800 light will be in stock on Nov 4th 2009. Most of them has been pre-ordered. Only a few left.
Posted by Anthony D'Antuono on 11/10/2009 2:33:00 PM Hello, received the Comer 1800 light. WOW...this thing is fabulous. From the build quality to the light output...a total homerun! Thanks so much! And the case was a nice surprise! Fit right in the Porta Brace case with my Z5U. Plan on ordering two 900's real soon! Thanks for a great product!

Posted by Donal McTucker on 11/23/2009 8:19:00 PM I received my Comer 1800 only two days after I ordered it. So thats Cali to Boston in 2 days. Thanks for the fast shipping. The light is brilliant! Makes the lightpanel Micro look like a travel version of light brights (kids toy). Wicked solid unit. Mounts up perfectly on my JVC GY HM100.

Replied by LA Color Pros Donal, that's great! I'm glad you like the Comer light.
Posted by Ken Mazur on 12/15/2009 11:30:00 AM Instead of camera mount, would like to use a tripod. Which one would you recommend, especially for travel? Looking at getting two 1800 kits for Sony camera. Thanks!

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Ken, Comer 1800 light is ready to be mounted on tripod or light stand without any adapter. However, it is recommended to use this adapter as the Comer shoe is plastic.

We do not have any tripod recommendation. It's best visit your local camera store to try them out yourself.
Posted by Jason Teoh, Singapore on 12/15/2009 8:35:00 PM I've just used it last weekend for a wedding shoot on a Panasonic HVX-202, shooting on 720P HD.

The light is superb! The most powerful On-board video light i've used based on its weight and size. The light has a soft output when the 3200K filter is popped on, on par with litepanels MicroPro for softness but way brighter. It covers a very wide angle unlike other halogen video lights that shoots an unflattering spotlight at your subject with very harsh shadows.

Take Note: As stated in the picture above, the light accepts a reverse polarity input. All my other equipment (smallHD Monitor, iKan monitor) that accepts a 12V input is DIFFERENT from this light. do make sure you check before plugging in an external source.

The owner, Taky is friendly and helpful. He helped me solve my reverse polarity issue and replied my emails very fast. Thanks

If youre a wedding/event videographer, get this light. You wont regret it. It helped me get out of many 'sticky' lighting situations last weekend.
If youre a DOP doing Narrative or info-eds, it comes in handy as a quick set-up fill light and location light.

Replied by LA Color Pros Jason, thanks for the nice comment. Glad to know you are able to use the Comer light at wedding over the weekend.
Posted by skyrunr, Albany, NY on 1/21/2010 1:19:00 PM I just wanted to day how much I am enjoying my 1800 LED light! I am a serious amateur and work in the professional photography software industry. I researched all of the other lights available because LED is clearly the way to go IMO. I was a little suspect of the 3200 filter when viewed to the naked eye, but after seeing my D300 adjust the white balance automatically the results were rather impressive. I've downgraded my main flash SB800 in favor of adding smaller wireless flash units for fill and back lighting.

It is very bright, but a person can keep their eyes open without a noticeable squint when the flash is on full power. This is a much better result than the typical flash cringe for sure. I'd like to see more professional headshots on the website, but I'm sure users will be posting them soon

When shooting my 3 month old baby I leave all but one of the "barn doors" closed, perfect! The car charger and ball unit I have no real use for. It seems a little heavier than my SB800, but with well over 100 minutes of constant light with no battery pack it is a no brainer. I'll try and post some samples after I adjust to direct lighting again.

Improvements:
I'd like a separate on off switch to use my prior brightness, and maybe in a better location so I can access it from the left or right. Granted with the battery life I can just leave it on.
It is a little bulky. Just remember to take the battery off before storing it in a bag.
The corner tabs to open or close the diffuser and spot focus covers should be a little larger.
I'd like a clip or switch to hold out the focusing filter for the "spot trick."
A custom gel holder "door" would be fantastic as well (I can DIY but it wouldn't be as slick)

Skyrunr, Albany NY

Replied by LA Color Pros Thanks for your comment. I will forward your suggestions to Comer.
Posted by Robert on 2/3/2010 8:13:00 AM are the led bulbs replaceable on the Comer CM-LBPS1800? Is it a sealed housing?

Replied by LA Color Pros Robert, the LED bulbs are not replaceable. They are made with professional quality that it virtually last forever. Thanks
Posted by Bora on 2/4/2010 11:15:00 PM Is this light compatbile with Sony NP-F570 ? It is a smaller battery than the 770 and 970. I bought a noname NP-F570 and it didn't fit.

Replied by LA Color Pros NP-F570 will power the light. I actually have a photographer using Comer 1800 light with NP-F570. Because of the low profile fo the battery, he mounted the light on his Canon 5D without a battery touching his forehead =)
Posted by Rich Melton on 2/8/2010 1:17:00 PM I am interested in the Comer CM-LBPS1800, but have a few questions. 1- I have a Sony NP-F750 battery. Is it compatable? 2- I now have a Canon Vixia FH S10 with a mini-shoe. Is there an adapter available so I can mount the Comer 1800 on my Canon? 3- Are there other color filters available for the Comer 1800?

Thx-
Rich

Replied by LA Color Pros Rich, let me answer your questions,

1. Comer 1800 lights take Sony L-Series battery. So you can use your NP-F750 battery with the Comer 1800 light.

2. We do not have the mini-shoe adapter. However, you can consider mounting your camera on a flash bracket for better handling of your rig

3. There are only white diffuser and orange diffuser available.
Posted by Alain on 2/9/2010 10:09:00 AM Fast shipment, I ordered Thursday and I got the package on Saturday. I even got some extra goodies. Very good product so far.
Posted by Bojian on 2/24/2010 3:18:00 PM Does the original comer 1800 come with the white diffuser as well? Or I have to buy it seperately? Thanks!

Replied by LA Color Pros It does not come with the white diffuser. The light is by default diffused. So basically you do not need to use the white diffuser. Thanks
Posted by Brian Kluth on 3/5/2010 3:05:00 PM I have a small video studio (with a painted green screen wall background) in the basment of my home to shoot internet videos (sample: www.stateoftheplate.info) with a mini Kodak Zi8 high def comcorder. I usually standing 5 to 10 feet from the camcorder when shooting. I have been using 3 light stands for my shoots. Which product do you recommend I order to replace or enhance my current setup. I also have a K20D digital camera. Does your product mount onto the K20D?

Replied by LA Color Pros Comer lights are flexible to be setup as flood or spot mode. You can use them to replace your current lighting setup easily. I am not familiar with the K20D digital camera. If it has a standard accessory shoe, it can host the Comer light.
Posted by Garrett Low at GLow Media Productions on 3/9/2010 1:16:00 AM I really can't say enough on the versatility of the light. It gave me enough punch but still looked natural to do an outdoor night scene on a rooftop deck in San Francisco. The lighting looked pretty natural for only having one light. It was really windy and really cold up there so we didn't want to pull power and set up a bunch of HMI's.

We also did a scene where the talent was walking down a dark street and had a PA hand holding the light up high walking backwards with them. I was able to dim it enough to get the scene to look believable.

The light worked out great.
Posted by Peter Hill from Ripple Multimedia on 3/11/2010 5:08:00 PM I have owned the Sony HVL-LBP for two years and have found it to be a good quality and versatile light. I broke the plastic shoe fitting very quickly though and Sony replaced it with an improved strengthened version. This one has lasted and seems up to the task. I am keen to buy the CM1800 for both its extra power as well as the focussed spot ability, but need to know that spares for this shoe attachment are available in the unlikely event of any damage to the shoe occurring.
I am based in Australia and thus the spares issue is important to me.
Do you have the unit now in stock?

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi, Comer 1800 is more enhanced than the Sony HVL-LBP in terms of color temperature, brightness, and usability. We have all the parts available here

Posted by Kevin Triplett on 3/17/2010 10:41:00 AM I own a rental company and a client from the UK came in with this unit. VERY NICE! Before I buy several of these, is it possible to get replacement parts? (Renters tend to be destructive at times.) Thanks!

Posted by Terry Kean on 3/30/2010 2:38:00 PM I received the CM1800 recently and was pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of this light! Very well built and very powerful light. A great value! Works great with my HPX 300.
I do have one question, however. The pamphlet that came with the light says not to use the light with an intelligent accessory shoe. My other camera is an XL2 which has an intelligent acc. shoe. Has anyone used this light on the XL2? Will mounting this light on the XL2 do any damage?

Replied by LA Color Pros Terry, I'm glad you like the light. As you can tell the shoe of the light is plastic. There would be no damage to your XL2 Advance accessory shoes. Actually I have used my light on GL2, XH-A1 and HV30. They are all fine. Thanks
Posted by Slaven on 4/6/2010 7:28:00 PM Info for future buyers.
I will not write a review cause others already done that, so I will just say that this is high quality product and shipment is very fast. For cordless light it's very powerful in low light ambient. I also bought two batteries NP 970 and received in Europe for about one week. Very nice and pleasant seller.
Posted by Kenneth Sands on 4/23/2010 11:16:00 PM Hi, how long is the provided D-Tap Cable?
Thanks.

Replied by LA Color Pros Comer now only includes one D-tap cable which is 0.55m. I can replace it with the longer one which is 1.2m in length.
Posted by Seth Berkowitz on 5/21/2010 11:36:00 AM I'd like to take a moment to say a few words about LA Color Pros and the Comer 1800.

Last summer, I purchased the Comer 1800 to use with my Sony HVR-270. I found it to be an improvement over my Anton Bauer UL-2.

While I didn't find battery life to be what others claimed, there were other features I liked. The spread was smoother, not as spotty, while the 3200k and 4500K filters allowed me to get pleasing colors at different temperatures.

When the light malfunctioned in December, Taky replaced my light at no charge for the new Comer. I discovered that the new light met or exceeded the battery life others claimed. Taky was very accessible by phone, text, and Email.

I recommend checking out the Comer 1800 and LA Color Pros.

Posted by Leo Morita on 5/24/2010 3:24:00 PM I have used the comer 1800 for a wedding event this past weekend and couldn't be happier! Great Light! I bought 2 F770s as well and they lasted all night long! I used the spot light to light the parents at the church and it was impressive!!
I definitely recommend this for any videographer!
Oh and Taky's customer service is definitely A++++++!!!!!

Replied by LA Color Pros Leo, thanks for your nice comment. I was a wedding yesterday. The videographer had a very weak camera light. It ended up, most of the time guests did not know where the event take place as they heard only the announcement from the MC. Comer spot light feature gives a focal point in the ballroom and making it a stage-like.
Posted by Kiaan on 5/28/2010 6:37:00 AM Hi, would this Comer 1800 be too big for my Canon HF S100?
Thanks

Replied by LA Color Pros It might be too big for a compact camcorder. However, you can try mounting the camera and light to a bracket like this one

Posted by San on 6/14/2010 12:55:00 AM Hi, does the Comer 1800 only come with Sony batteries?..I was looking at getting the Comer 900 with Canon batteries now and if I later upgrade to the 1800 than I would have to go with Sony batteries so can't use my Canon ones?

Thanks

Replied by LA Color Pros That is correct. There is only 1 model of Comer 1800 that uses Sony compatible L-series battery.
Posted by Maria on 7/1/2010 10:50:00 PM I am really interested in buying one of this lamps, but I am not sure which would be the best to get a 1800 or maybe get a 900 and later on get another one. I own a Vixia HF S10 and I use it mainly for small clips on events. My main activity is till photography, so I might also use it as a continuous light. I am afraid the 1800 will look too big on my camera and more than I need

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Maria, for you HF-S100, you will need to get an adapter in order to mount standard accessory to the camera. So you can consider mounting the camera to this bracket

http://lacolorPros.com/products/item.asp?id=fb1
http://lacolorPros.com/products/item.asp?id=fb3

It will increase your rig stability too. Now you can mount the Comer 1800 light to the bracket without feeling too big. Otherwise, the Comer 900 light will fit what you need to do.
Posted by San on 7/7/2010 4:57:00 AM Hi, am enjoying the Comer 1800 I purchased from you. Could you please suggest how I can get rid of shadows created when focussing the light on subjects in a darkly lit room?

Thanks

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi San,

You can check out (google) 3-point lighting. That's the technique used in setting up lighting in a professional manner.

Posted by Jordi Aerts on 7/26/2010 8:46:00 AM I want to film with my Canon 5D Mark II, is it possible to mount this light?

Replied by LA Color Pros Yes you can mount the Comer light on top of your 5D Mark II. If you plan to take still photos with the view finder, you will need to use the NP-F770 or NP-F570 batteries so the battery won't be touching your forehead.
Posted by Michael Liebergot on 8/9/2010 9:10:00 AM Taky, what cable woudl you recommend for connecting an XLR battery to the DC input on the Comer?

Would you please tell me more about the condenser lens tricks thingy that I viewed in the video you have posted on your site. Is it an accessory and if so, how much and most importantly, how is the condenser lens tricks achieved? Thanks.

The condenser is the bottom piece attached to the light included. No additional cost.
Posted by Cesar on 8/19/2010 11:27:00 PM The New Comer CM-LBPS1800b Second Generation Model is the same unit that you sell in the deluxe kit?..includes the bag too?..Sorry for the questions..

Replied by LA Color Pros Cesar, yes we are selling all second generation Comer models. Please check under "Package Content" of what is included in the package.
Posted by robert in naples florida on 8/25/2010 10:53:00 AM Excellent light! Well built and very functional. Do not hesitate to buy to all considering. Thank you Comer!
Posted by Claire on 8/26/2010 5:16:00 AM Yes, agree with all the positive comments about this light, but the Sony NP-F570 battery has a slightly different footprint and does NOT work with the Comer 1800 in the battery compartment. See your comment 2/4/2010 "NP-F570 will power the light..." It probably will but not in the battery compartment.

Replied by LA Color Pros The product works with our NP-F570 battery. Please take a look at this page for typical run time too.

Posted by Jeff Harper on 9/9/2010 10:56:00 AM I just ordered the Comer 1800, but have used it before. I talked a friend into buying one last year and I went on a shoot with him. The light is phenomenal. My friend (Miquel) says it is the single best value of anything he's purchased for his video business so far. The light is everything it is claimed to be. It makes the Micropanels look sick.

I am stoked that I can finally afford to have one of my own!

Replied by LA Color Pros Jeff! Glad you like the Comer light too! Welcome to be one of us =)
Posted by Dimitris Chasiotis on 10/14/2010 1:58:00 PM I am interested in buying the New Comer CM-LBPS1800b Second Generation Model to use it with my Sony HVR-270. At the moment i use the SWIT S-2000 (D-Tap powered only) and although i was happy when i got it, very quickly i understood it was not powerful enough. My question is: can i use it now with the included D-Tap cable and buy a separate NP-F type battery in future time? or the $369 package has the D-Tap permanently attached? and not the possibility to place an NP-F Sony compatible battery on it? Thank U 4 your time

Replied by LA Color Pros Dimitris,

Comer lights come with D-tap cable that you can connect it to your existing battery without using the NP-Lxxx batteries. One customer has a light malfunction because he powered the light with both D-tap and the battery at the same time. Thus, it's best to avoid that.

The D-tap cable is not permanently attached to the light. You connect the one end of the included cable to the light through the DC-in. The other end is connected to the D connector on the battery.

Posted by Boris Marshalik on 1/24/2011 5:01:00 AM I have spent the best part of 4 hours researching on-camera lights for my new Panasonic DMC-FZ100.
first off, i am not a professional, in fact i am comfortable taking shots with a cybershot camera equipped with exmor r and sweep. lol. but in saying that, i wanted a decent all in one still and motion camera. i have tried to shoot video at night inside or out with no lighting and its useless (as im sure you'd know). so, to feel happy with my purchase; i need a light.

After all the forums, reviews, video's and numerous emails, the Comer models are just far beyond everything else sub $800USD retail. so now i need to ask a question; most of my night footage would be outdoors with minimal to no light assistance at all. the environment would be often a backyard barbeque with several ppl to fit in view. Is the 900 model capable enough or must i go to the top to the 1800 model? if i need something stronger than the 1800, what would you recommend that would make sense for the environment mentioned above?

Again, i wouldn't call myself even a regular camera user, and you can assume i know nothing but the basics (probably not even that, as i still don't understand all the features on my fz100), but your lighting knowledge and experience would be incredibly helpful for me to get the best use out of my new toy.

thanks in advance

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Boris, thank you for your comment. Comer 1800 is indeed a powerful and flexible light to be used both on-camera or off-camera.

The younger sibling Comer 900 is also a great choice. However, it delivers only half the brightness with 2 levels of brightness control instead of a full dimmer. Thus, if you can afford and you don't mind a bigger light, go with Comer 1800 by all means. You never complain there are too much light because you can always dim the brightness down to the exact amount you like with the dimmer. However, in situation that you want more light coverage, 1800 can deliver.

In your situation when you shoot complete dark outdoor, you will find the 1800 gives you the best lighting result as well as the wide coverage.
Posted by Popit on 1/25/2011 11:41:00 PM Anybody know where I can get this in Singapore or Philippines. I'm very much interested in getting this lights. Thanks.

Posted by Andre Araiz on 2/16/2011 6:09:00 PM This light seems like the best one on the market for dslr use. Not convinced on the litepanels pro. seems pretty cheapy to me.

Saw the video. Please explain what the Condenser Lens Trick is all about??

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Andre, thanks for your nice comment.

The condenser lens trick is while closing the condenser lens, leave it open about half an inch. In that case, the light will be condensed into a very narrow but strong beam. It's good when you need to zoom in in a dark place.
Posted by Carl Feather on 3/7/2011 10:17:00 AM I am looking for an LED interview light kit. Would the Comer 1800 provide enough light for one person interview setups? I would like to pump one of them in a Lastolite softbox (24 inch), or is this necessary to get a soft main? I'd like a second for accent, perhaps a third for background. Plan to use one of my many reflectors to fill.

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Carl, as everybody recommend, the best lighting setup is the 3-point lighting. It can be achieved by 3 light sources, or 2 light sources + 1 reflector. Other than that, you can also achieve decent interview lighting using just 1 light setup on the right as key light, and 1 reflector on the left as fill light. For such setup, you will need a powerful light for that purpose. Comer 1800 will be strong enough to do this job.

The light is already diffused. You can also use the top orange diffuser to further diffuse the light source. Or a lot of photographers replaced the top orange diffuser with the white diffuser to create a soft box effect.
http://lacolorPros.com/product/?RG1800-White-Diffuser-for-Comer-1800

To create depth to the video, you can use another Comer 1800 light shines from the back of the object. That will creates a glow of the person to separate from the background.

We also have the new Comer 5500 light that is mainly for this kind of portable lighting studio setup.

Replied by LA Color Pros Jeremie, the white diffuser is not included in the package.
Posted by Brett Sherman on 3/11/2011 8:57:00 AM For my Comer 1800, I've been using this softbox. Just added some velcro to the bezel on the light and stick it on. It definitely improves the quality of the light.

Replied by LA Color Pros Thanks for sharing that information. It will be helpful to many Comer users.
Posted by Dando on 4/4/2011 8:01:00 PM I plugged a power brick into the DC-in and now my CM-LBPS1800 (first generation) will not work via the battery. It must have been the wrong polarity.

I bought the Radio Shack power brick but the 1800 only attains about 25% brightness.

I'm sure the LED's still work. Is there any way to fix my problem?

Replied by LA Color Pros You might probably fried the circuit board of the light. Please contact us through our web site for warranty service.

Thanks!
Posted by Koblog on 5/27/2011 5:58:00 PM One thing missing from the Comer 1800 is the aux cold shoe on top.

The Comer 900 has a very convenient plastic shoe that allows you to mount a small wireless mic receiver. I've used this combo several times and it works great.

With the 1800, once you mount the light, where do you mount the wireless receiver? You'd have to purchase a dual shoe wye and have yet another contraption on top.

Replied by LA Color Pros The reason not to have another shoe on top is the total weight. That will also make the rig higher. It will put a lot of pressure to the camera shoe itself.

We have several brackets you can consider when using the light with another accessory such as a shotgun mic.

Posted by sonu on 7/10/2011 7:36:00 PM Where do i get the Extension cable to power it off wall plugs?

Replied by LA Color Pros The D-tap cable is for connecting any external battery that provides D-tap connection. They are not meant for wall plug.

We do not know where in Canada you can find the AC adapter. I'm sure there're many local electronic stores that you can bring the light with you to try them on.
Posted by sonu on 7/11/2011 6:00:00 PM I bought one from The Source Equivalent to the Radio Shack in Canada with 12v/1500 MA everything same like radio shack one but when i plugged this one it started to flicker and smoke starts to come out so i just pulled the plug nothing got damaged light was good working with batteries. If any Fellow Canadian finds one please put it on here where did you get one

Posted by Florentino Acosta on 8/27/2011 9:58:00 AM I am planning to use my CANON 60D to shoot an 18th birthday celebration and it will be an all night event with lots of action. My question is how many batteries do I need for a 3 to 4 hours continuous video coverage? Thank you.

Replied by LA Color Pros Are you talking about batteries for your 60D or batteries for the Comer light?

This is the LP-E6 battery for 60D. I would suggest getting 3 to 4 batteries so you don't have to find AC outlet to charge battery while at the job.
http://lacolorPros.com/product/?LPE6N-LP-E6-Fully-Decoded-Battery-for-Canon-5D--7D--60D

For the Comer light, I would suggest getting one NP-F770 and one NP-F970 battery so there would be about 6 hours of coverage.
Posted by Eric Coughlin on 9/15/2011 1:27:00 AM The Comer 900 comes with an option of getting a Canon battery compatible version. Any chance in the future of the Comer 1800 getting a version that is compatible with Canon batteries?

I have a Canon XH-A1s, so the benefits of such a version are obvious.

Replied by LA Color Pros Comer 1800 only accepts Sony compatible L-series battery.
Posted by Steve Skemp on 9/19/2011 5:45:00 PM I'm trying to decide between the Comer 1800 and the Dedo Ledzilla as an on-board light for my XDCam EX3. How would compare the two products? Although more expensive, the Lezilla seems to have higher luminance, more precise controls, and wider accessory selection such as soft-box. How does the Comer 1800 match-up?

Replied by LA Color Pros I checked the spec of Ledzilla. They don't mention any lux spec except the one that is 3000 lux spot. Comer 1800 has 10 high power high output LED bulbs. The included condenser lens also allow the light to focus in spot light. Comer is also unique at 4500K color temperature so you can use it indoor or outdoor without any filter. Most of the time we need a diffused light source rather than just a small focus spot.

There is also a condenser lens trick for the Comer light that create a narrow pin spot that projects far away. Here's you can take a look at some sample videos.

Posted by Jenny Lehman on 10/3/2011 1:29:00 PM I am trying to figure out a way to mount the Comer 1800 on a 10+ foot stand and turn it on and off while still mounted 10+ feet high and using a battery not AC. Any suggestions? I love my Comer 1800 and want to buy more if I can figure a way to use in this way. Thanks.

Replied by LA Color Pros Comer have no plan to add any remote control on/off to the 1800 light. However, I am using this way with the D-Connector and cables come with the light, to connect to our BP-U65 or BP-U95 battery.

http://lacolorPros.com/product/?U65-Sony-Compatible-BP-U65-Battery-for-Sony-EX1-EX3

The battery will be hung at the bottom of the light stand and function a little bit like sand bag. Then I can connect and discount the power from the battery below. No need to lower and raise the light stand to turn on and off the light.
Posted by MikeB on 11/7/2011 7:58:00 PM I'm using the Comer 1800 with Sony NP-F970. The battery tends to slip making the light loose power. Does anyone know of a battery sled that is compatible?

Posted by Bern Hammond on 5/1/2012 7:20:00 PM Hi,

I was interested in the CM-LBPS1800b, but was wondering if it is flicker free when dimming. I will be using it with a Sony HVR-HD1000U. This camera uses a CMOS sensor and can suffer from flicker induced rolling shutter problems if the light dims by adjusting duty cycle. Thanks in advance.

Replied by LA Color Pros Bern, Comer 1800 light does not flicker. Usually cheap LCD lights suffer from this issue when using AA batteries.
Posted by Brian Fletcher on 5/14/2012 1:45:00 PM I dropped my battery, and ordered a replacement battery for my Comer 1800 (which is an AMAZING light, btw). Taky had it to me the next day, as I am also in SoCal and right in time for a shoot! Thanks Taky and lacolorPros!

Replied by LA Color Pros Tony, Comer 1800 light doesn't have a 12V plug. Also, what power source you are using with?
Posted by cgbier on 4/1/2013 11:24:00 PM Taky, will this light be able to use Sony QM-91D batteries? I have a bunch of them left over from my old Sony A1.

If they fit, we are in business.

Replied by LA Color Pros Cgbier, it only takes Sony L-Series batteries. The model number is always like NP-Fxxx such as NP-F970, NP-F750 etc. Those batteries are not expensive.
Posted by Robert on 5/5/2013 4:36:00 PM Hello Taky,
Hope all is well. Is there any other power supply for the comer 1800 other than a Radio Shack that you know of please? Not a fan of RS and want a quality PS for my 2 comers I purchased from you. Thanks for your time.

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Robert, that's the only one I was told by our previous customer. Actually, you can check the rating marked on the side of the light. Any charger with the voltage and polarity matches will work.
Posted by cgbier on 6/3/2013 12:13:00 AM Holy Maccaroni, that is a piece of light! Loads of power, the dimmer adjust finely. It is compacter than I thought, and even goes well with my Canon HV30. When using at 4600k on an XF series cam, you have to do a custom white balance. Auto W/B on the HV works fine.

Posted by Paul Anderegg on 5/29/2015 12:42:00 AM I just bought a Comer type LED on eBay after seeing this website. It says it's a model LED-1800, 1200lm, came in some weird "spash" box with an OEM NP-F970 and powertap adaptor. It was only $70 so I figured I would see how it performs prior to plunking down several hundred for one from lacolorpros. It arrived and I was immediately disappointed. LED's put out 4700k per my Sony, but with the condenser, you get 6300k blue center with a severe green ring. It's like a weird circular blue/green rainbow, very unusable. Tested it against my 900 lumen (1m) Neewer CN160. The CN160 is about 3-4x brighter. Also tested it against my CN304, which is 1800 lumens. Obviously, it is 6-8x brighter!

So my questions would be as follows. If my CN304 LED is listed as 1800 lumens (1m) at 5800k, would your Comer 1800 be AS BRIGHT at 4500k? When the Comer condenser is applied, does the color temperature change, and is there any off color rings involved like my "splash"? I can handle bluish and even greenish CT's, I gel everything I own to 3200k, but weird multicolor light is unusable.

Last question would be, with the CTO applied, what is the resulting color temperature? If your Comer is actually 1800 lumens at 4500k, then after applying a 3200k CTO, it should be BRIGHTER than my 18 watt CN304 with 3200k CTO right? If you can stand behind the claims, I can place an order right away. :)

Replied by LA Color Pros Hi Paul, we don't have your CN304 light so we cannot comment on it. Our Comer 1800 light output at 1800lux at 4500K color temperature. When using the condenser lens, the output is even brighter. The color temperature is constant at 4500K. The top filter is the CTO filter that change the color temperature to 3200K.
