Professional DVD and BluRay Production by Yourself

Posted on 1/1/2016 6:09:00 PM

There has been some discussion at DVinfo.net on DVD and BluRay production. Here's the list of what we use for our wedding DVD and BluRay production

Glossy Watershield Blank DVD and BluRay Disc

Glossy blank inkjet printable media makes a day and night huge difference on the printout quality on DVD compared that to regular white inkjet printable disc. Also, "hub" printing disc allows printing all the way to the inner hub area of the disc. We use Falcon media which is an industrial standard for DVD and BluRay productions.

DVD and BluRay Case Insert

We use Costco Kirkland Glossy Photo Paper to print the DVD and BluRay case insert. We specifically moved the design to the top left of the page. By using the printer's borderless printing feature, we will only need to trim the bottom and right edge of the page.

Photo Printer and DVD Printer

We are using Epson XP-620 Inkjet Printer together with a Continuous Ink System (CISS). Ink cost is never a concern anymore.

DVD and BluRay Design Template

I moved the DVD and Bluray Insert design to the top left of the page. Print using the printer's "Borderless" feature, you only need to trim the bottom and right edge of the page.

Stationery

These makes it very easy to trim off the edge of the DVD or Bluray case insert. You can stack 10 prints and trim them together at the same time. Make sure you use a metal rule with bevel edge. and don't cut yourself. :)

Falcon make a watershield Blu Ray too.
There is no minimum to buy I've bought as low at 5 Blu Rays the first time.

Replied by LA Color Pros Elias, thanks for the info. I have been looking for watershield glossy type blank BD. I am definitely going to try them out.
Posted by Kyle on 12/3/2012 12:46:00 AM Hi,
I was just curious if you had an estimate of how many DVDs you could print per-ink cartridge (or usage of the CISS). I have about 150 DVDs to print out, and I was just thinking if it's even cost-efficient going this route (buying the printer/ink/DVDs) or else trying to find somewhere to do it for me?

Replied by LA Color Pros Kyle, I don't know the exact count of how many DVD can be printed. But I can tell you, once you are on CISS, you never have to worry about that at all. Ink on bottle is relatively inexpensive. I have printed hundreds of DVDs with CISS. Once we printed 200 DVDs to be given out at tradeshow.

Posted by Kyle on 12/10/2012 10:51:00 PM I've been looking into it, and is using refillable ink cartridges actually cheaper than going with CISS? Thanks for your quick response and help!
Posted by Robb Simmons on 5/12/2015 6:04:00 PM A CISS system with basically generic photo paper wounds like a really good idea, but in my experience, the long term ink quality is sub par.

Replied by LA Color Pros There're two types of ink technology. Dye based and pigment based. Dye based print out is more vivid. But color got decolorized easily by day light. Generally print out last about 10 years. Pigment based ink print out is not as vivid but will last over 100 years. So it really depends on which type of ink you choose. So far, all the generic ink we tried printing out quality output on Costco photo paper.
